Semantic Web for Pathology.

The project "A Semantic Web for Pathology" aims to realize a Semantic Web based retrieval system for the domain of "lung pathology". For this purpose the pathology data is annotated with semantic references and the textual pathology reports are used as descriptions of what the associated images represent. The annotation process is realized using ontology based text processing algorithms i.e. NLP heuristics using a domain ontology representing background medical knowledge, which also serves as a vocabulary in order to control the retrieval process.

The system is based on Semantic Web standards like XML, RDF(S), OWL and RuleML as well as well known medical standards and patterns (UMLS, HL7, SCORM).

The project is realized cooperation with the university hospital Charité, Institute of Pathology (Dr. Thomas Schrader) and the University Potsdam, Department of Computer Linguistics (Prof. Manfred Stede). It is funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft German Research Foundation).
